Early Life
Jack Michael Antonoff was born on March 31, 1984, in Bergenfield, New Jersey, the second of three children of Shira and Rick Antonoff. He grew up in the northern New Jersey suburbs of New Milford and Woodcliff Lake, attended the Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County and later commuted into Manhattan for the Professional Children’s School. His older sister, Rachel Antonoff, became a fashion designer.
The defining loss of his youth came when his younger sister, Sarah, died of brain cancer at 13, while Jack was a senior in high school. He has spoken openly about how that grief shaped his songwriting, and her memory runs through much of his Bleachers material. New Jersey shaped him too: the Shore, the highways and the suburban basements where punk bands played remain constant reference points in his lyrics.
Music started early. In 1998, during his sophomore year, he formed the punk band Outline, which released an EP and the album A Boy Can Dream before breaking up in 2002.
Career
Steel Train and fun. (2001–2015)
In 2001 Antonoff co-founded the indie rock band Steel Train, which signed with Drive-Thru Records and toured relentlessly through the 2000s. His breakthrough came with fun., the trio he formed in 2008 with singer Nate Ruess and Andrew Dost. After the debut Aim and Ignite (2009), the band’s second album, Some Nights (2012), produced “We Are Young,” a song Antonoff co-wrote. It went to number one in the U.S. and earned fun. the Grammys for Song of the Year and Best New Artist in 2013. The band went on hiatus in 2015.
Bleachers (2014–present)
Antonoff launched Bleachers as a solo project in 2014, with Strange Desire arriving that July. The project’s big, heart-on-sleeve sound — 1980s synths, saxophone and singalong choruses about loss and New Jersey — continued on Gone Now (2017), Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night (2021) and the self-titled Bleachers (2024). Bleachers has since grown into a full live band and a reliable festival draw.
In 2015 he founded the Shadow of the City festival in Asbury Park, which raises money for The Ally Coalition, the LGBTQ+ youth charity he co-founded with his sister Rachel. In 2023 he turned the name into a record label, Shadow of the City, an imprint of Dirty Hit.
The producer behind the stars
His work as a producer is what made Antonoff one of the most influential figures in modern pop. The partnership with Taylor Swift began on 1989 (2014), with songs such as “Out of the Woods,” and continued through Reputation, Lover (“Cruel Summer”), the pandemic albums Folklore and Evermore, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department, as well as several of her re-recordings.
He co-produced Lorde’s Melodrama (2017) and Solar Power, and became Lana Del Rey’s main collaborator on Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019), Chemtrails Over the Country Club (2021) and Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd (2023). He also worked with St. Vincent on Masseduction and Daddy’s Home, and with Florence and the Machine, The 1975, Pink and Clairo.
The mid-2020s brought some of his biggest hits yet. He co-wrote and produced five songs on Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet (2024), including “Please Please Please,” then most of her 2025 album Man’s Best Friend. He also co-wrote and produced 11 of the 12 tracks on Kendrick Lamar’s GNX (2024), including the number-one singles “Squabble Up” and “Luther.”
A Grammy record
Antonoff won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical three years running, in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and shares in Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year wins for 1989, Folklore and Midnights. At the 68th Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026, “Luther” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA won Record of the Year, with Antonoff credited as co-producer. According to Guinness World Records, that win made him the first producer to complete the “Big Four”: Record, Album and Song of the Year plus Best New Artist, the last two earned with fun.
The list of near-misses is just as telling. Albums he worked on have also been nominated for Album of the Year many times, including Lorde’s Melodrama, Swift’s Evermore and The Tortured Poets Department, Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! and Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet and Man’s Best Friend, and Kendrick Lamar’s GNX. Few producers of his generation have appeared in the top category so often, across such different artists.
What’s New in 2026
Beyond the Grammy milestone, 2026 has been a busy year for Bleachers. The band released lead single “You and Forever” in February, with a video featuring Antonoff and Margaret Qualley, followed by “Dirty Wedding Dress” in March. The fifth Bleachers album, Everyone for Ten Minutes, came out on May 22, 2026, via Dirty Hit; NME reported the band’s own description of it as an “optimistic record that feels lovestruck and hopeful.”
A North American tour started in Chicago in June, including a five-night Los Angeles residency, and ran into October. The band is now on the road in Europe and the UK, with dates in Milan, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin and other cities through a closing show at London’s Eventim Apollo on December 3. NME noted that £1/€1 from each ticket goes to The Ally Coalition.
His personal life also made headlines this autumn, as our news report Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff File for Divorce explains.
Personal Life
Antonoff dated actress Scarlett Johansson in the early 2000s. He was later in a high-profile relationship with writer and actor Lena Dunham, the creator of Girls; the couple split in December 2017.
He met actress Margaret Qualley in 2021, and they married in August 2023 in Beach Haven, on New Jersey’s Long Beach Island. Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey were among the guests, according to USA Today. In July 2026, People reported that the couple had separated. A representative for Qualley rejected tabloid claims about the reasons, saying the two still had “deep love and care for one another.” On October 30, 2026, the divorce was filed in Kings County Supreme Court in Brooklyn as an uncontested matter, according to court records cited by The Associated Press and USA Today. No reason for the split has been made public.
Outside the studio, Antonoff has been a longtime advocate for LGBTQ+ young people through The Ally Coalition, which he co-founded with his sister Rachel and which benefits from his Shadow of the City festival and Bleachers ticket sales.
